Tim Mergel Ready To Get Started At Ontario

Ontario, OH- Last Friday Tim Mergel was hired as the new boys basketball coach at Ontario following the retirement of Hall-of-Fame coach Joe Balogh. On Monday he met with his team telling them why he took the job. “Like I have told people the last time this job was open was 30 some years ago and I’m not getting any younger and I can’t wait around 30 more years I just thought that it just seemed like the right opportunity and the right time to jump on it and I feel very fortunate that I was offered the opportunity to accept the position. “I told the team that Ontario to me from the outside looking in has always been an interesting place when you think of Ontario basketball you think winners and it’s my job to come in here and sustain that attitude and build on the foundation that has already been put in place,” said Mergel.Mergal also contends that over the years the Warriors always played to the teams strenghts. “What Joe’s done a nice job of he gets guys to buy in to what their strenghts are and what ever their strenght are they play to them and that is not going to change we are going to play to the guys strenghts offensivley, defensively we have to have open minds to see what our strenghts and weaknesses are and develope from that is our philosophy of which way we are going to go with that.” When sked if it was tough to follow someone like Balogh Mergel said “I’m not here to replace Joe I’m the guy they picked to come after him. I’m never going to replace Joe Balogh I’m never gonna replace Joe Balogh no one can . The name is on the floor that we are standing on so he is a one of a kind he is a pillar in the community that you don’t see very often anymore. I’m here to just simpley build and sustain the success that he has had and the foundation that he has built and contunue on with that success and make successful student athletes like he has. Mergel says he is ready to get started. “I was handed the keys today so you know any opportunity that we have to get in the gym we are going to try to take advantage of but also understand we have a lot of guys in multiple sports which is a good thing my message was if you are not involved in multiple sports any opportunity we have to get in the gym we’ll take advantage of it and those that are in the spring sports keep working hard and when that opportunity comes to summer time you get innvolved by all means lets get it done.” ‘
