Shelby Whippets Slip Past Warriors For Key MOAC Win

SHELBY, OH – Shelby Whippets use timely free throws and buckets to edge Ontario 65-60 on New Year’s Eve at Shelby High School. Despite the early afternoon start, both teams would come out hot from the three-point arc with both teams matching each other shot for shot. Shelby’s Brazure Roberts had three 3-pointers in the 1st quarter for the Whippets as the game would be back and forth for the whole 1st quarter. Ontario’s Darian Delbrugge would hit several 3-pointers off the bench as the Warriors and the Whippets would be tied 17-17 after one-quarter of play. The Warriors defense would stifle Shelby’s TJ Pugh to just five points in the first half and a big reason Ontario would stay in it despite going cold from the field in the second quarter. The Whippets would take a 27-24 into the half time with strong shooting from the free-throw line. In the third quarter, Shelby’s TJ Pugh would score five points in an opening couple of minutes to give Shelby a 34-29 lead halfway through the period. The Warriors would later tie the game at 36-36 as neither team could not get a lead of more than five points for most of the game. Ontario would take a 40-38 lead into the final period after a lay-up by Zach McCristall. The fourth quarter would mirror most of the game as both teams would go back and forth. Shelby’s TJ Pugh and Cody Lantz would make timely buckets for the Whippets to give them control of the game once again. Though the biggest shot of the night would go to Shelby Freshmen Alex BruSkotter who would nail a corner three-pointer to give the Whippets a 50-44 lead. Ontario would get as close as 54-50 but could not get any closer thanks to the hot free-throw shooting by the Whippets down the stretch. Shelby would go 14 of 19 from the free-throw line to win 65-60 while Ontario was 8 of 18 from the charity stripe. Shelby was led in scoring by TJ Pugh who had 15 points in the second half and 20 for the contest. Cody Lantz and Brazure Roberts were in double figures for the Whippets with 17 and 12 respectively. Ontario was led by Griffin Shaver with 14 points and Kolten Kurtz with 13. Also in double figures for the Warriors was Gage Weaver with 10 points.
