MADISON TOWNSHIP. State Ranked Mount Vernon scored early putting Madison down 2-0 in the top of the first inning on their way to a 12-1 win over Madison in softball on Tuesday night at Madison. “Offensively we did a lot of good things today,” said Mt.Vernon coach Ryan Pentz. The speed of the team showed today our one, two hitters got a lot of speed at the top of the order. Pentz also talked about his defense his team committing just one error which did not come back to hurt them. “We did have one throwing error but the defense played extremely strong and end result I tell them all the time if we can play good defense and pitch well we will be in any ball game. They scored two in the first, two in the third, and two in the fifth they didn’t blow anything open on us, and even at that in the bottom of the sixth inning we had the bases loaded and it’s 6-1 and Kylie (Reiter) had a couple of really good swings and drove a pitch to the backside of the gap and if that thing gets down it’s a different ballgame,” said Madison coach Tim Niswander. But they made a play then we had a meltdown on defense in the seventh kicked one away and kicked another one away and had a double-play ball that we could not make a play on so the ball not getting down in the sixth with the bases loaded I think caused us to drop our heads and feel sorry for ourselves, but we’ll learn from it. They are a good team they are ranked fifth in the state in Division I for a reason and they are really, really good and you have to come to play and you have to play the whole game at the top of your game or things can get away but I don’t think the score was indicative of what the game was. But we’ll get better and come back and we’ll do it again.”The two teams were to have played again at Mount Vernon on Wednesday, but becau8se of an April snowstorm the game has been called and will be made up at a later date.
