Lady Whippets Show Heart as Comeback Bid Falls Short in District Final Loss to Bellevue

ASHLAND, OH – Shelby Lady Whippets erase a 16-point deficit but fall 58-52 to Bellevue in Division II District Final at Ashland High School on Saturday night. Both teams would battle back and forth in the first moments of the game before great defense would give Bellevue the advantage in the first quarter. Shelby’s Mary Mayor would play a fantastic quarter to have the Lady Whippets only trail 12-8 after the first quarter. The Lady Red would force Shelby into five turnovers to keep the Shelby offense off-balance in the opening quarter. In the second quarter, Shelby’s Olivia Baker would nail a three-pointer to cut the Lady Red lead to just one but Bellevue’s Cory Santoro would show why she scored her 2,000th point in her career during the game. She joined her sisters in the 2K club in Bellevue Girls Basketball history in the process. Santoro would score 16 points in a flurry to outscore the Whippets 23-14 in the second quarter and have the Lady Red take a 34-22 lead into halftime. Bellevue was led in scoring by Santoro with 17 points and Brynn Vogel added eight points. Shelby was led in scoring by Mayor and Baker who had eight points apiece. In the third quarter, A three by Bellevue would stretch the lead to 37-22 and put the Lady Whippets into a serious hole to start the second half. The Lady Whippets would ramp up the defense and start chipping away at the Bellevue advantage a little bit at a time. Bellevue’s Emma Bollinger would try to stave off the momentum by scoring five points in the third quarter to lead the lady Red. Shelby’s Baker sisters would score a combined 14 points to lead the rally for the Lady Whippets. The Lady Whippets would hold Santoro to only four points to trail 48-41 heading into the final period of the contest. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Whippets would complete the comeback to make the final moments of the contest very interesting. A three by Senior Sydnie Seibert would cut the Bellevue lead to 48-44 after both teams would struggle to gain footing in the opening minutes of the final period. The Lady Whippets would use Lady Red turnovers and tie the game up at 48 all. Eventually, the Whippets would take their first lead of the game since the first quarter at 50-49. Bollinger would nail a triple to retake the lead for Bellevue at 52-50 with under two minutes to play in the contest. Shelby would tie the game with only a minute remaining in the contest. Bellevue would be better in the closing moments down the stretch by hitting clutch free throws and a drive Santoro to give them a four-point cushion with 45 seconds remaining. Ultimately, the Lady Whippets would fall to Bellevue 58-52. Bellevue was led in scoring by Santoro who finished with 23 points and Bollinger added 14 points for the Lady Red in the victory. Shelby was led by Olivia Baker who had 18 points and Haylee Baker 13 points in the loss. With the win the Lady Red advance to a Division II Regional Semi-Final at Mansfield Senior High School at 5:30 pm. on Tuesday against Napoleon.
