SHELBY, OH – Galion Tigers capture Mid-Ohio Athletic Boys Tennis Tournament for the first time in dominating fashion on Saturday at Shelby. This year’s tournament was split into two days with doubles competition on Thursday at Lakewood Racquet Club due to rain and then the singles competition on Saturday at Shelby. After day one, Galion and Ontario were tied atop the team standings with 12 points each while splitting first doubles and second doubles titles. The No. 1 doubles title went to Galion with a 6-1, 6-0 over the Warriors but then at N0. 2 doubles, it was Ontario beating the Tigers 6-1, 6-2. In No.1 Singles action on Saturday, the final was between Galion’s 3rd seeded Matt Gimbel and Pleasant’s Top-seeded Dane Williams. The match would be worthy of a title with William’s cruising to a 6-2 first set win after the pair traded breaks of serve to open the match. Gimbel would not go away and level the match with a 6-4 second set victory and ride the momentum into the third set. Gimbel would jump out to a 5-2 lead in the final set with Williams looking tired despite having a bye into the semi-finals. Williams would win the next five games to pull off a stunning comeback 7-5 in the third set. Williams would be the MOAC 1st Singles Champion defeating Gimbel 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in a three-set thriller. Previously the pair had split the two head-to-head matches this year. In No. 2 Singles action, Galion’s Top-Seeded Chris Amick took down Pleasant’s 2nd seeded Eian Zachmann in the finals 6-3, 6-1. Amick adjusted to the windy conditions to overpower the Spartan with hard-hitting shots and serves. Galion would use two titles and two runner-up finishes to secure the program’s first-ever MOAC tournament title with 27 points. Ontario would come in second place with 19 points with a third-place tie between Clear Fork and Marion Pleasant with 16 points.
